How Your 1500m Plan Is Built

The 1500m sits at the punishing intersection of VO2max, lactate tolerance, and neuromuscular power — you need a high aerobic ceiling AND the raw speed to finish faster than you started. Your plan builds each in sequence. First, an aerobic base to raise the ceiling. Then two concurrent quality tracks — one sharpening from longer aerobic work down toward race pace, the other developing your tolerance for repeated efforts at true 1500m intensity. Race-intensity volume within a single session is deliberately capped — more doesn't build fitness, it just accumulates fatigue. Peak weekly volume scales from 35–50km for beginners to 70–95km for advanced runners; long runs 12–24km. The taper is the sharpest of any distance we support: volume drops 35% in week one to leave your legs as fresh as possible, versus 30% for our 5K plan and just 20% for our marathon plan. We also check your stated goal against that build: if your 1500m target outpaces what your current fitness and plan length can deliver, we show you the achievable time instead — or a faster one, if you're underselling yourself.

Most runners choose 10–14 weeks
Peak Long Run
12–24km depending on your level
Training Focus

1500m Plan Questions

How long is a 1500m training plan?

Plan length is calculated from your race date rather than a fixed template, with a 10-week minimum. Most 1500m runners choose 10 to 14 weeks — enough time to run the bottom-up and top-down progressions in parallel without rushing the transition to true mile-pace work. Whatever the total length, the final two weeks are always your taper — and it's the sharpest cut of any distance we support.

What kind of workouts are in a 1500m plan?

Two concurrent quality sessions per week. The bottom-up ladder progresses through 3×(3×400) → 3×(2×600) → 2×(2×800) → 2×(5×400) → 10×400 at mile pace, cycling standing rest, active-jog recovery, wave/ladder/pyramid shapes, and broken-rep clusters. The top-down descent starts at 5×1200 at 10K pace and sharpens over the Build phase down through 5K pace, 3K pace, and finally flat mile-pace reps — with the earlier steps carrying Peter Coe's descending-rest clusters and short-first reorders. Race-week sessions use short, sharp mile-pace reps or threshold + R-pace clusters. Paces come from the Jack Daniels VDOT system, calibrated from your goal time and your actual Strava efforts.

How much weekly mileage do I need for a 1500m?

Peak weekly volume scales with your level — roughly 35–50km for beginners, 50–70km for intermediate runners, and 70–95km for advanced runners — determined from your Strava history and goal time rather than a fixed number. Your long run makes up 20–25% of that weekly volume, ranging from 12–14km up to 20–24km across the same levels. True mile-pace volume within a single session is deliberately capped at 3.2–4.0km per tier to keep adaptation clean, not accumulate junk fatigue.

How does 1500m taper compare to other distances?

The taper is always exactly two weeks — same structure as every distance we support — but 1500m cuts volume by about 35% in week one, the sharpest reduction of any distance. Compare that to 30% for our 5K plan, 25% for the half marathon and 10K, and just 20% for our marathon plan. 1500m racing lives or dies on top-end speed and neuromuscular sharpness, so fresh legs matter more than accumulated volume.

Who checks my 1500m plan?

Ivan G. — an endurance coach with Bulgarian national championship experience (10th place, 5000m Outdoors) and a track record coaching athletes to national XC medals — reviews your mile-pace volume, top-down ladder pacing, and taper before you start training.

Is this 1500m plan free?

The Strava analysis and your first 4 weeks (the Base phase) are free, no card required. Unlocking the full 10-to-14-week plan with a coach review is a one-time €39 — or €79/month for ongoing coaching (weekly check-ins throughout, plus a dedicated race-week check-in) that automatically ends on race day.
