How Your 10K Plan Is Built
The 10K sits at the pace where lactate threshold and aerobic power meet — you need both. Your plan trains them in parallel. Key sessions build sustained work at 10K intensity with recovery structures that get progressively less forgiving — training your body to keep clearing lactate on the move rather than after a full break. A second weekly session sharpens down through the aerobic spectrum, starting at half-marathon pace and sharpening over several weeks down through 10K pace toward 5K pace — you learn to race off accumulated fatigue rather than fresh legs. Your long run carries about 25% of weekly volume and, in the race-specific phase, embeds a block at aerobic power pace. Peak weekly volume runs 40–58km for beginners up to 78–105km for advanced runners, with long runs 14–28km across the same range. Taper cuts volume by 25% in week one — moderate, the same as our half marathon plan — always over a fixed two-week taper. We also check your stated goal against that build: if your 10K target outpaces what your current fitness and this plan's length can realistically deliver, we show you the achievable time and pace instead — or a faster one, if you're underselling yourself.

10K Plan Questions
How long is a 10K training plan?
Plan length is calculated from your race date, not a fixed template, with a 10-week minimum. Most 10K runners land between 10 and 12 weeks — enough time to build alternation-interval fitness at race pace without the longer build a half marathon or marathon needs. The final two weeks are always your taper.
What kind of workouts are in a 10K plan?
The core session is an alternation workout — segments at 10K pace alternated with a "float" pace that never fully recovers — progressing toward flat 2km reps at race pace as your plan builds. A second session runs top-down from half-marathon pace, sharpening through 10K pace to 5K pace over several weeks. Every pace is calculated from your Strava fitness data via the Jack Daniels VDOT system, not a generic chart.
How much weekly mileage do I need for a 10K?
Peak weekly volume scales with your level — roughly 40–58km for beginners, 55–78km for intermediate runners, and 78–105km for advanced runners — determined from your Strava history and goal time rather than a fixed number. Your long run makes up about 25% of that weekly volume, ranging from 14–16km up to 24–28km across the same levels.
How does 10K taper compare to other distances?
The taper is always exactly two weeks, same as every distance we support. Volume drops by roughly 25% in week one — a moderate cut, gentler than our 5K plan's since 10K fitness sits closer to threshold and is somewhat less sensitive to a hard reduction in training load.
Who checks my 10K plan for accuracy?
Ivan G. does — an endurance coach with Bulgarian national championship experience (10th place, 5000m Outdoors) and a track record coaching athletes to national XC medals. He reviews your alternation-interval paces and weekly volume before you start training.
Will PaceForge tell me if my 10K goal is unrealistic?
Yes. We estimate your current fitness from your Strava history or PRs, then project where that fitness realistically lands by race day given your plan's length. If your stated goal implies faster gains than that build supports, we show you an achievable 10K time and pace instead, with a note on why. If your projected fitness is well ahead of your stated goal, we'll flag that too — you may be able to aim faster than you think.
